WHY LICENSURE MATTERS

Once you’ve earned an architecture license, you can officially call yourself an architect. There are several benefits of being a licensed architect, including: qualifying for more job opportunities, being able to sign off on blue prints, and being able to design public health buildings. Above all, an architecture license means you’re more trustworthy. It gives prospective employers and the public assurance that you have adequate architecture preparation, including the necessary skills and aptitude to protect their health, safety, and welfare.

WHO ADMINISTERS THE ARCHITECT REGISTRATION EXAMINATION® (ARE 5.0)?

The Architect Registration Examination® (ARE 5.0) is administered by the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards (NCARB), a nonprofit organization that facilitates licensure by developing and administering national programs for licensure candidates and architects. NCARB also promotes collaboration, by addressing significant issues that impact the profession, and centralizes credential data, by providing a platform for interns and architects to manage their credentials.

ARE 5.0 is a computer-based test that has content divided into six divisions and can be taken in any order. Divisions are organized around the progression of a typical architecture project. Each division is between three-and-a-half and five hours long with between 80 and 120 items. Each exam division also has one or two case studies. For more details about each division, visit our “About ARE 5.0” page.
