IDIX is the implementation-focused section of the NCIDQ exam. While the Interior Design Fundamentals Exam (IDFX) measures foundational knowledge and the Interior Design Professional Exam (IDPX) focuses on professional practice, IDIX concentrates on how interior design decisions are developed, documented, coordinated, and communicated for construction and installation.

What is the IDIX exam format?

The IDIX exam is a computer-based exam that includes 130 questions, 15 of which are unscored pretest questions. Candidates have four hours to complete the exam, including time for an introductory tutorial that explains how to use the testing software.

The exam includes a mix of the following question formats:

Codes and Life Safety – 16%

This content area evaluates your ability to apply building codes, accessibility requirements, and life-safety standards to interior design projects. Questions may require you to interpret code information or determine whether a design decision meets applicable requirements.

What types of questions are on the IDIX exam?

The IDIX exam uses four question formats. Understanding how each item type works can help you spend less time navigating the exam interface and more time evaluating the information presented. 

Multiple-choice questions

Multiple-choice questions ask you to select the best answer from the options provided. Read the complete question and review any accompanying exhibit before making a selection. If you are uncertain, eliminate choices that do not meet the stated requirements and make your best educated guess rather than leaving the question unanswered.

Hot spot questions

Hot spot questions require you to select a specific location or area within an image, plan, drawing, or other visual. Review the prompt carefully to determine exactly what element, condition, or location you are being asked to identify.

Drag-and-place questions

Drag-and-place questions may ask you to sort, rank, label, match, or position items. Before answering, confirm whether every item must be used and whether the order or placement of each item matters. Review the completed response before moving on to ensure every required field has been addressed.

Fill-in-the-blank questions

Fill-in-the-blank questions require a numeric response. Follow the answer instructions closely, including any requirement to round to a particular number of decimal places. Enter only the requested value and do not add units unless the question specifically instructs you to do so.

How much time do you have for the IDIX exam?

Candidates receive four hours of testing time to complete the IDIX exam. The overall appointment shown in the Prometric confirmation may be longer because it can also include check-in, a confidentiality statement, a tutorial, and an end-of-exam survey.

When is the IDIX exam offered?

The NCIDQ exam is administered twice each year, during the spring April administration and the fall October administration. Candidates must pay for and schedule their exam during the applicable scheduling period through their MyNCIDQ account, then select an available Prometric appointment.

CIDQ currently lists the scheduling periods as January 3 through March 31 for the April exams and July 1 through September 30 for the October exams. Since dates and policies can change, review the current CIDQ schedule and Candidate Handbook before making plans. 

Who can take the IDIX exam?

Eligibility for IDIX depends on a candidate’s education and verified interior design work experience. Candidates who have completed the applicable requirements may apply for the exam sections available through their eligibility route.
