Great Prep Book for CE Civil Transportation Depth exam Review by Amazon Customer
    Overall
This book provides in-depth coverage of the exam subject matter for the Transportation section of the PE Civil Exam that you take in the afternoon session. It meets the NCEES' Transportation Depth Exam Specifications and covers the 11 design standards used in the exam. It essentially combines the 11 titles into one comprehensive reference manual.

The book is well written and well structured. It provides a thorough review of the exam topics and equations, which appear to be up to date with the latest exam specifications. In addition, it contains example problems that show you how to apply the concepts and equations to solve the typical problems found in the exam. It also contains practice problems at the end of each chapter that you can practice and check with the provided solutions.

Another great feature of this book is the index, which is thorough and useful in that it allows you to find the relevant concepts and equations quickly and easily.

The book is designed to be used in conjunction with the PE Civil Reference Manual, which provides in-depth coverage for the breadth section of the PE Civil exam that you take in the morning session. If you are preparing the Transportation Depth exam, this is the book you need. I would also recommend the companion books Transportation Depth Practice Exams for the Civil PE Exam and the Transportation Depth Six-Minute Problems for the PE Civil Exam. (Posted on 2/23/2018)

Another Great Reference Book From PPI! Review by Amazon Customer
    Overall
Norman R. Voigt's Transportation Depth Reference Manual for the Civil PE Exam (2nd Ed) is a nice supplement to a Civil Engineer's library as he/she is preparing for the Civil Engineer PE Exam and life as a practicing professional engineer. The manual is part of PPI2Pass' (Professional Publications Incorporated) line of licensure exam material and resources and is essentially a supplement to the long standing "bible" of PE exam study literature produced by MIchael Lindeburg (and also published by PPI).

As one of five sections to the "breadth" portion of the Civil Engineer PE Exam (with the others being Construction, Geotechnical, Structural, and Water Resources and Environmental), Transportation is an important area of study when preparing for the PE. In this book, Transportation is broken up in 6 broad sections (Transportation Planning, Traffic Capacity and Analysis, Pedestrian and Mass Transit Analysis, Geometric Design, Transportation Construction, and Traffic Safety) with 4-6 practice exam questions/answers in each section. It also includes a very lengthy (70 pages) reference section full of tables and reference figures.

As an engineer and long time use of PPI's material, I can attest to the quality of the literature. One of the questions on my PE exam was an almost exact copy of a sample problem out of my Lindeburg study book so I was able to easily refer to it and competently solve the problem with the information that I had been studying for weeks. In addition, the book is easy to read with a large font and Voigt's writing style helps the book flow and continue to be engaging - at least as engaging as a reference guide can be.

Overall, I was very happy Norman R. Voigt's Transportation Depth Reference Manual for the Civil PE Exam (2nd Ed) and it will be a welcome addition to my engineering resource library. $170 for a 350 page book is pretty outlandish, but its essentially the price that you pay for any name-brand PE reference book since the amount of work to put it together and edit it far exceeds the number of possible buyers in the target audience - similar to senior-level college text books. This book will be a nice companion to other Transportation Engineering books by PPI such as Six-Minute Solutions for Civil PE Exam Transportation Problems, 5th Ed,Practice Problems for the Civil Engineering PE Exam: A Companion to the Civil Engineering Reference Manual, 15th EdPractice Problems for the Civil Engineering PE Exam: A Companion to the Civil Engineering Reference Manual, 15th Ed, and Civil Engineering Reference Manual for the PE Exam, 15th Ed. MUST HAVE Reference for Transportation Depth Exam Review by Amazon Customer
    Overall
This is a great reference manual for the Transportation Depth section (PM portion) of the Civil PE exam.

I took the exam three years ago and wish I had this manual. To be honest, I could probably have avoided purchasing 3-4 $200+ books and references if I had this manual. It is currently sitting in my office and is a reference that I use regularly. If you pair this with the Civil Engineer Reference Manual (Civil Engineering Reference Manual for the PE Exam, 15th Ed) you've got the majority of your references for the entire exam covered.

In total, this book comes close to replacing the Green Book (A Policy on Geometric Design of Highways and Streets 2011), MUTCD (Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices for Streets and Highways - 2009 Edition with 2012 Revisions), Roadside Design Guide (Roadside Design Guide), and the Highway Capacity Manual (Highway Capacity Manual: HCM 2010 (3 Volume Set)). In total those four books new would be nearly $1000.

This book is broken down well into 6 main topics: Planning, Traffic Capatiy and Analysis, Pedestrianand Mass Transit, Geometric Design, Transportation Construction, and Traffic Safety. Additionally it has a lengthy appendix with most of he reference tables and materials you'll need on the exam.

Whether preparing for the exam or just looking for a good reference manual to keep around for work, this is a great resource that will save you money and time. (Posted on 2/23/2018)
