    This is the companion manual to the FE Mechanical Review Manual. I also have that and I’m going to include my review of that one below. This one of course are much needed practice problems that will enable the user to get some much needed practice. Three minutes is the target number everyone needs to aim for in order to get through the exam.

    There are more than 460 multiple-choice questions to work through in this book. In addition there are several online study aids / features that can be accessed (there’s a code in front of the book). As far as the book goes, I do like the uncluttered feel. For some reason, that does make a difference. I don’t like pages that are so jam packed they make feel claustrophobic.

    Topics include mathematics, probability and statistics, fluid mechanics, thermodynamics, heat transfer, statics, material properties and processing, mechanics of materials, electricity and magnetism, dynamics, kinematics, and vibrations, mechanical design and analysis, measurement, instrumentation, and controls, computational tools, engineering economics, and ethics and professional practice.

    Answers are in the back of each chapter rather than in the back of the book. When I look at problems, I hate to have to do a major search to find them. The answers are given with explanations of the solution. I would have like to have seen both manuals combined, but for some this may be a workable layout.

    THE FE MECHANICAL REVIEW MANUAL:

    There have been exam changes on the FE and there’s no better way than using an up-to-date manual to practice on. At this point in time there are 110 multiple-choice questions and you’ll have six hours to complete them. If you do the math it’s easy to see you’ll only have a few minutes to answer each question. The areas covered in the exam include:

    ► Mathematics
    ► Probability and Statistics
    ► Engineering Economics
    ► Statics
    ► Dynamics, Kinematics, and Vibrations
    ► Mechanics of Materials
    ► Fluid Mechanics
    ► Thermodynamics
    ► Heat Transfer

    All of these are very thoroughly covered in the FE Mechanical Review Manual. Just checking around the net shows me that a prep course can cost up to a whopping $900. Add the FE Mechanical Practice Problems manual and you’re looking at a bargain. It doesn’t seem like one until you do some comparative shopping.

    Are you going to pass? If you are conscientious about studying and really work through the prep book and the practice problem one (I highly recommend getting it), it is guaranteed you’ll pass. If by chance you don’t, there are instructions on the inside for a total refund. You probably won’t need it, but you won’t need an expensive course either.

    The topics do cover everything on the exam plus some. You’ve taken the courses, but each chapter has a comprehensive summation of what you’ve learned with a sufficient amount of example material to job your memory. For example, when you’re looking at the chapter on combustion, you’ll review heats of reaction and combustion. Small highlighted sidebars show Hess’ Law, Enthalpy of Reaction, Air-Fuel Ratios, and Percent Theoretical Air equations. You’ll then find descriptions of each, a sample question, and a solution.

    There are several small mini-exams, but I primarily see this as a study guide in which to review materials. There are numerous tables, charts, graphs, and other visual materials scattered throughout the book. More support can be found on the publisher’s website.     This book contains 400+ practice problems with well-explained solutions covering the concepts needed to pass the Mechanical Fundamentals of Engineering Exam. It is intended to be used as one part of a comprehensive plan of preparation and the author clearly outlines the the limitations.

    One page of general advice for the exam is included. A key to online resources is also included, but they are limited and do not include practice problems.

    The practice problems cover sixteen of the seventeen topics included on the exam, omitting Licensure. The topics are further divided into subject chapters.

    This is a guide to taking the test and not so much a general study manual.. It covers the areas that will appear in the test. Especially helpful to those who are well geared to the technical aspects but not as much general ones as pertaining to the field are the ones on ethical practices. That's an area that could throw some test takers and is wise to be prepared for.
