License Renewal and Continuing Professional Competency Requirements


FE/FS Exam mid-Aug mid-Feb

The following PE exams are given in October only: Agr, ConSys, Fire, Geotechnical (CA), Ind, Manf, Met, Nuc, Pet, Str (CA), and Traffic (CA).

FE Exam Information

Min. educ. required: Completed Junior yr in EAC Eng curriculum
Required degrees/experience: At least 3 years of an EAC Eng degree; or 3 yrs exp
Waiver granted for FE exam: Possible: with EAC Eng degree + 15 yrs exp; EAC BS and MS Eng degrees + 14 yrs exp; TAC Eng Tech degree + 17 yrs exp; EAC MS Eng degree and TAC Eng Tech degree + 16 yrs exp; Non-EAC Eng degree + 17 yrs exp; EAC MS Eng degree + Non-EAC Eng degree + 16 yrs exp


PE Exam Information
NCEES exams offered: All except Env, Min/Min, Str I and II, and Naval/Marine
Residency requirement: No
Required experience: EAC Eng degree + 2 yrs exp; non-EAC Eng degree (including all non-US schools) + 4 yrs exp; 4-yr TAC Eng Tech degree + 4 yrs exp; other combinations

Special California notes: To become registered as a Civil PE in California, you must pass the NCEES 8-hour Civil PE exam and two special exams: Engineering Surveying Principles (2-1/2 hrs) and Seismic Principles (2-1/2 hrs). These two exams are given the day after the regular PE exam.

California also administers its own Structural Engineering Examination. This is a 16-hour test administered over two days. For details on this exam, see the CA Board web site.

License Renewal Information

License renewal: PE and PS: Every 2 years
PDH required for renewal: PE and PS: No
