I think it's just the situation we are in right now. CE's w/ mid level experience are hard to come by right now, especially in the Socal area. So just take advantage of that fact when negotiating pay.
wow..so glad to see a CE making six figure income..pls tell us what field u r in..

is the 4 years experience after PE or before PE?What was your salary before PE?What is the situation for non structural CEs/EITs?esp lan deveop& hydrology?

I've 4yrs exp(taking PE next) in Land dev & Util & some transport, but I make exactly half of your salary in TX. Its true that Calif is expensive , but is it twice expensive?I have offers from FL but just about same salary($50-$60K)..
I hope our previaling wages will be adjusted soonn..

I am in transportation. When I graduated from school in 2003 there were 20 civil and 400 computer science in the engineering school. Added to the fact that I was the only person out of that 20 that was transpo empahsis the rest were structural. It's hard to find people w/ mid-level experience. My company is top heavy w/ a bunch of newbies straight out of school.
I think it sucks that CE's dont' get paid as much as the amount of schooling and work we have to put in to be a PE. I feel that it's our fault as engineers that we don't demand more compensation. My cousin just passed the bar and her starting salary is 150k. Her summer internship paid her 30 bucks and hr while my engineering internship paid 12 bucks and hour. And to be honest the only difference between me and her is that she has 100k in loans to pay off.

Hi, I am in a civil firm (tranporation) in NJ. Been with this firm for 6+ years. Started at 45k and currently at 70k. Now that I have passed the PE, they are offering me 79k.

I figure with the present inflation levels ( I got my last raise in July 07), the present raise is not much, and want to negotiate for more. I saw my equivalent median salary at Monster @ 87k.

I think this topic has not only been overdone but I can't help but think half of you are full of it. By listing yearly salary we are not taking into account that some work 40 hr weeks while others work 60. I have friends who brag about how much they make but they are never home. I think comparing hourly wages is a better way to compare, but that's just my opinion.

Ok then,

$/hr. = $45/hr.

Yearly wage = $93,000 @ 40hrs a week rate.
Exp. = 5 years.
Degree: BS/MS Civil/Structural

Seriously? An EIT making $45 an hour? I apologize for my ignorance as I don't live on a coast but you can't be serious. How much does your boss bring down 1.2 million?

Why would I be joking about it?
My rate is $45 an hour but I am about to get a PE license. Just waiting result for my Surveying part since that is the only one left for me to get the PE.

I think we are close to 1 million/year. Note that I am the only engineer besides my boss. We just have one more drafter.

djefe,

I have to say I'm still shocked but you're right why would you be joking. I guess I'm just shocked. I have a PE and an SE and I'm bringing in a littel less than 2/3 of that per hour.
