Before you register to take any division of the ARE, you must meet certain requirements and establish an NCARB record. Detailed requirements can be found at the NCARB website.

How do I contact my state board for architecture registration?

PPI maintains a list of state boards on its website. Click here for a list of state boards.

What is the format of the ARE?

The ARE consists of seven divisions. The exam in each division (with one exception) contains multiple-choice, fill-in-the-blank, and check-all-that-apply questions, in addition to graphic vignettes. The exception is the Schematic Design division, which contains only vignettes.

Each division of the ARE is computer-based and administered exclusively at Prometric testing centers. Prometric centers are located throughout the United States, its territories, and Canada. Most centers are open six days a week, 50 weeks a year.

In what order should I take the divisions?

Once you have been approved by a state or provincial registration board, you may take the exam divisions in any order and at any location you choose.

How long can I take to complete the seven divisions of the ARE?

To be registered, you must complete and pass all seven divisions within a 5-year period.

How should I prepare to take a division of the ARE?

Start by downloading NCARB's ARE Guidelines. You should also download NCARB's exam guide for the particular division you're preparing for. See below for links. Pages may be slow to load.

You may also wish to purchase exam prep materials from a third-party publisher. PPI recommends the following exam prep materials for the divisions of the ARE.

Can I use my own calculator during the exams?

No. You may not bring a calculator into the testing room. An on-screen calculator is available in every division. A demonstration version of the calculator is available at the NCARB website. Plan to acquaint yourself with it before you take the exam.
