This was a good study guide and reference for the exam. I bought PPI's self-study package (this, sample questions and tests, etc.) and used it for 90% of my studying, with some of my old text books filling in where I was weak. I don't understand why someone would buy an electronic book that they cannot take into the test.
I still needed to use my old text books as referencs at the test, but this book helped a lot. The book could be a better reference if it had more definitions and a stronger section on computer security. There are many extra sections in the book that are good to have (the book explains which chapters), but don't waste your time studying parts that won't be on the test. However, with just PPI's materials and my 10-20 year-old text books, I passed on my first attempt. (Posted on 12/16/2013)
This turned out to be an exceptionally poor book for the test, but unfortunately was the only book available at the time that was supposedly "dedicated" to the computer PE exam. As it turns out, upwards of a dozen chapters in the book are nothing more than useless filler that don't appear on the exam, instead having been lifted directly from the FE reference book in order to take up space and justify the $200 pricetag. And topics which are actually relevant to the test and present in the book (such as networking, programming, etc.) don't receive NEARLY as much attention as they should. The section on programming covers FORTRAN and C++ and is incredibly tiny, despite programming being a major portion of the test. And this theme carries on throughout into the various other topics. And the icing on the cake? The "suggested references" that this book recommends bringing to the exam are almost just as useless/outdated/irrelevant as this one.
Long story short, this book is garbage and a waste of money. Get a copy of the official NCEES sample exams so that you can see what type of problems are actually on the test, and use books that are actually on those topics to study. (Posted on 12/16/2013)
